The Premier League has announced a significant rule change aimed at reducing time-wasting by goalkeepers. Starting July 1, 2025, goalkeepers who hold onto the ball for more than eight seconds will concede a corner kick to the opposing team, replacing the previous penalty of an indirect free-kick for exceeding six seconds. Wolverhampton Wanderers’ goalkeeper, José Sá, expressed confusion over the new rule, suggesting that an indirect free-kick would be a more appropriate punishment. Former England goalkeeper Rob Green supports the rule’s intent but acknowledges the increased pressure it may place on defenses late in games.
